Thirty years on from their groundbreaking trio of the early sixties, this session seems much less iconoclastic and more melodic. Swallow, now playing guitar-like electric bass, gives the band a different dimension. There's a lovely version of the standard "I can't get started" - the sort of thing you wouldn't expect in the 1961 performances. It strikes me as three guys who've done it all and just want to enjoy playing together with old friends.

I don't know what the motivation for reforming was, or why they didn't carry it on for much longer. In fact information on the net about this trio is a bit sparse. It'll be interesting to hear if anyone can shed any light on it.

This was broadcast on a French-Canadian radio station, sound quality is excellent. Thanks to "nocturne" for seeding.

Thanks, Boromir. Always welcome when a rare Giuffre recording creeps up from between the floor boards.

Thanks boromir! Nice addition to the OWLs with Bley as the leader from about that time. The sound is great and the group and solos sound really fine. Beautiful!

Much thanks! The world would be a better if there was more Jimmy G!

"Nice addition to the OWLs with Bley as the leader".

Paul wasn't THE leader.
Their name on the record was just given in alphabetic order.

Thanks for that nice download.

One of my idols. To be able to range from big band arranging to toe-tapping on the front porch to unleashing the earth-spirit on "Free Fall"--brilliant. I'm interested to see if he gets posthumous recognition by the mainstream jazz press for all his innovations and his blessed stick-to-it-ivness.

Thanks for the post!

Thanks a lot for that post. Just heard, more than one month after the fact, the sad news that Jimmy Giuffre had passed away. I suppose the main reason why the reformed trio didn't carry on much longer was that he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 1994 and started losing his dexterity.
I heard the trio live in Paris on two occasions, in 1993 and 1995. By 1995 Giuffre was beginning to look frail and had to be escorted on and off the stage by Bley and Swallow. The music was splendid as ever -- lean, witty and deeply humane. He was a wise man, a great musician and will be much missed.
