Although of its time I do think this is a worthwhile record that I often return to.

Forgot to say, I've only had this in a 192 mp3, so thanks for the upgrade.

Thanks, Onxidlib. I'm downloading it now, so haven't had a listen yet, but trust that it's as enthralling as all the other Milford Graves and Arthur Doyle recordings I've heard thanks to the excellent work here at IS.

WallofSound, what do you mean "of its time"? To my immature ears (I'm pretty new to all this), Graves always has an enduring sound that, if not always ahead of its time, sounds fresh even today. What makes it characteristically 70s?

@anonymous, there was a particular commitment in the mid to late 1970s to create a 'free' 'black' 'art' aesthetic. Looking back percussion was a strong element of this, as was a (then) unusual combination of instrumentation, and an exploration of abstraction. Many of these elements were then absorbed into the European free scene, and into US black and even mainstream jazz. I'd agree with you about 'sounds fresh even today'; especially this one.

I can not find out words to express my appreciation to this post. Because I have been looking for this album over for 25 years, since I could have chance to listen to this music in a very short part at a LP shop. Since then, in my country, it was very difficult to find out this album, or if I could, price was incredably expensive, I could not bear.

Again, many many thanks.

An official reissue is coming with a bonus cd on November

Ernst Grgo Nebhuth said...

Finally! - since years I've heard rumours about a reissue. I assume the CD edition will be on 'Corbett vs Dempsey'. At least that's what I've read in John Corbett's last book 'Vinyl Freak'.
In the book he writes that he planned a reissue of 'Bäbi Music' but also of 'Nommo/In concert at Yale University'.

However - so I shall delete the link - thanks for the heads-up correct silence.

'Bäbi Music' is now available on a double CD with extra material from 1969!
