SPONTANEOUS MUSIC ENSEMBLE "UNRELEASED STUDIO RECORDINGS 1966 - 1968"

Soundwise these recordings are a bit muffled but the music's really excellent IMHO.
Maybe someone has a better version!?

The Double Trio track was recorded about two month before Brötzmann's 'Machine Gun' - makes for an interesting comparison.

Maybe one day it will see a proper release....

1. Juicy (from the unreleased Cul-de-Sac soundtrack) (K. Komeda/2:10/completed track)
Kenny Wheeler, trumpet
Paul Rutherford, trombone
Trevor Watts, alto saxophone, breathing
Jeff Clyne, bass
John Stevens, drums, percussion

Recorded by Eddie Kramer, probably at Olympic Sound Studios, London, April 1966.
The Ensemble was apparently commissioned via Eddie Kramer to record compositions by Krzysztof Komeda for the soundtrack of Roman Polanski’s 1966 film Cul-de-Sac, an offbeat black-comedy set on the island of Lindisfarne.

2. Springboard (and radio announcement) (Stevens/3:56)
Kenny Wheeler, trumpet, fluegelhorn
Paul Rutherford, trombone
Evan Parker, soprano & tenor saxophone
Trevor Watts, alto saxophone, flute, oboe
Derek Bailey, guitar
Barry Guy, bass
John Stevens, drums

Recorded live by BBC Radio at the Paris cinema, London, Mon March 20, 1967;
tr: BBC Radio Light Programme The Jazz Scene (Jazz Club slot), March 26, 1967.

3. Willow Trio - Part 2 (extract 7:59)
Evan Parker, soprano saxophone
Barre Phillips, bass
John Stevens, percussion

Recorded by Eddie Kramer at Olympic Sound Studios, London, October 6, 1967. Willow Trio sessions.

4. Double Trio - Part 1 (32:05)
Evan Parker, soprano saxophone
Trevor Watts, alto saxophone
Dave Holland, bass
Peter Kowald, bass
Rashied Ali, drums, percussion
John Stevens, drums, percussion

Recorded by Eddie Kramer at Olympic Sound Studios, London, March 10, 1968. Unreleased studio session.
 Island (unissued)

Yes! Lovely music!!! Thank you! The double trio is amazing even without hearing the music. And with the music!!!!!! How Rashied Ali ended up to these "jams"? I hope someone took photos at the after party. Sorry for the promotion but somehow these recordings made me think of the great Finnish free jazz 4tet Rauhan Orkesteri. Gentle fire, anti-macho horns... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1uqSLX8sYDM

Great stuff!! There's a little session info here: http://www.efi.group.shef.ac.uk/mstdisc1.html

Seems like there's a lot of other interesting SME sessions that haven't seen the light of day... yet (???)

Thanks onxidlib for more unreleased SME

Rashied Ali was briefly resident in London at the time of the double trio. He also played in a quartet with Feza, Pukwana and Harry Miller (would love to hear that!) ...

Thanks Clifford for the insight!! More of these sessions would be definitely great to hear.

Hi Richard - there's an active link available in my comment from 14 November 2019.
BTW - which musician would like to listen? Don't think it's Evan Parker or Dave Holland. Maybe Trevor Watts - maybe.... Or one of the two bassists: Barre Phillips and Barry Guy?? I'm a bit puzzled. Please enlight me.
I imagine that at least the musicians living in the UK probably should have a better source than my radio broadcast which I got years ago and was surely the xxxxx-copy. Especially the last track lacks clarity etc. soundwise, not at least due to the music's density. Apparently the tapes for the session with Rashied Ali have been discarded. Sadly, I must add. And Evan Parker doesn't seem to like his playing on the track with John Stevens and Barre Phillips. So I really would appreciate your input.
Cheers

Hi Ernst,

Sorry It was John Russell, whom I thought was on one of the pieces, that asked about the tracks because he would have liked to listen to them....I know he is not after looking over it closely ...

It is always good to have a listening access to old recordings and inconstantsol blog does a great service in bringing recording to light :-)

Best wishes and stay safe in the UK

Cheers
Richard

Hi Richard, OK I understand (no sorry necessary). I wonder wether John Russel was already playing the guitar (an electric one as far as I remember was his first instrument) in '66/'68.
However - enjoy the music.
Take care and greetings from southern Bavaria.

John Russell did not appear on the scene until about 1972.

Thanks for your input Martin - sadly I have to report that John Russell has died of cancer yesterday.
